GALLERY 8-- The Palio, Casole d'Elsa
The Casole d'Elsa Palio is a smaller version of the famous horse race in Siena. It has been occurring in Casole for over one hundred years. The preliminary races occur on Saturday at which time horses and riders are paired with one of the six "contradas" or neighborhoods. After the horses are blessed in the church each contrada has a neighborhood outdoor dinner where the riders are toasted and fight songs sung. On Sunday afternoon the Palio is held. That evening the whole town celebrates- the triumphant contrada parades down the main street with their newly won Palio (banner).
